"When the screenplay for Black Hat finally arrived at my desk to read, I knew immediately that I wanted to produce it. Not because of its very unique backdrop of anime, manga (Japanese comics), and cosplay, which certainly adds a fresh slant to this 'road trip' movie, or because of its subject matter—teen bullying—which is so prevalent today in schools (especially in the LGBT community). I certainly find myself wanting to talk to each and every one of these kids, who have feelings of isolation, loneliness, and despair everyday. I want to hug them and tell them, 'This is not the end; it is barely the beginning.'"
We are proud to announce the launch of the new website for BLACK HAT! This is your home for everything on the film, including videos, images, updates, and more. Be sure to sign up to receive updates as we continue to crowd fund and bring the film to life.Read more
Just a few days after Cassie died, I was contacted by a friend who knows a fellow named Robbie Bryan, who is a writer/producer/filmmaker. He's in the process of raising funds to make a film called Black Hat, which is about a girl who is teased and bullied for being a fan of anime and cosplay, and her epic quest to get to an anime convention in Louisiana to meet one of her idols. She had told Robbie all about Cassie, and Robbie was touched by Cass, as all of us are, and wanted to name one of the main characters in the film after her, and fashion her look after our Cass. I was so moved by this sweet gesture. What better way to remember our baby girl, who started cosplaying at age 10, attended her first convention in costume, and couldn't wait to go to Comic Con this year?
MANGA/ANIME-THEMED FEATURE FILM “BLACK HAT” SET TO TACKLE TEEN BULLYING AS THEY HEAD TO SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL TO RAISE AWARENESS AND FUNDING WITH SEED & SPARK, THE CROWD FUNDING AND DISTRIBUTION PLATFORM FOR INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS
The national fundraising campaign for Black Hat soared in the first few days to raise almost 30K for their ambitious campaign to combat the effects of bulling in school and individuality as well as promote the passion of the anime, manga and cosplay community with writer/director/actor Robbie Bryan (iMurders, The Stand-In).
Our Crowdfunder Pick of the Week highlights Robbie Bryan’s new Seed&Spark-backed project, Black Hat, which pushes its strong anti-bullying message through the perhaps unexpected medium of Japanese anime.
"Earlier this month, the national fundraising campaign for Black Hat launched to promote the passion of the anime, manga and cosplay community with writer/director/actor Robbie Bryan (iMurders, The Stand-In). The launching pad is with Seed & Spark, a truly independent filmmaking community where filmmakers and audiences come together for crowd funding, production, and streaming distribution. "
